The report aims to discuss the learning styles and motivation for attending lectures and in this regard, it can be mentioned that the educational experiences of certificate and diploma courses will be discussed here. The goals that helped to stay motivated were: task completion, a better understanding of the assignments, better time management etc. A number of learning can be gained from the experiences, such as attendance in regular lectures can help to make new friends and to be involved in class activities, communication skills can be improved while attending lectures and understanding skills can be also improved. The attendance was okay and it was about 70% the major factors that affected the attendance were, inefficiency in time management and lack of punctuality, and being less interactive with others affected the attendance as well. Moreover, some physical health also affected attendance (Alzain et al., 2018). However, managing attendance in lectures is of utmost importance as it can improve learning styles and other learning experiences.

Learning styles analysis

In Honey & Mumford's learning styles, it can be found that there are mainly four different approaches that might help people to learn new information, such as activist, pragmatist, theorist and reflector. People with activist learning styles have some major attributes such as they take new challenges or new experiences and they might feel guilty and not learn effectively from teaching auditing. People with a theorist learning style like to enjoy concepts, models and frameworks and they analyze hypotheses (Kannan et al., 2021). Moreover, people with a pragmatist learning style like to enjoy trying new theories and abstract concepts whereas, the people with a reflector learning style prefer watching and taking information from multiple sources to conclusions. On the other hand, it can be found in the learning styles theory by Kolb (1984) that learning needs the acquisition of some abstract concepts and that can be applied to understand the flexibility of the situations. The major concept of this learning theory is to acquire knowledge through experience transformation (Dantas and Cunha, 2020).

Student Attendance

In terms of discussing the six types of attenders according to Dolnicar (2004) cited in "understanding student attendance" by Mearman et al., ( 2014), it can be found that there are mainly six groups and all of the groups differed in motivation to attend their lectures.

  • The first group can be described as idealists and people in this group feel enthused and think that the lectures can make their knowledge meaningful.
  • The second group can be described as pragmatics and students in this group want to know why they require learning and due to this, they pay attention to information.
  • The third group of students are similar to pragmatics but they like attending their lectures because it is easier than learning without any company (Oldfield et al., 2018).
  • The fourth group can be mentioned as the fundamental-oriented students who want to learn the fundamental principles of a particular topic.
  • The fifth group of students are labelled as minimalists and they attend lectures so that they cannot miss the important information.
  • The final group attend their lectures because they feel enthused, however; they do not enjoy the lectures.

Self-analysis

Considering Honey and Mumford's learning style questionnaire, theorist as a learning style is preferred since it can be helpful to understand the theories behind every action. Moreover, models, concepts and various facts and frameworks can be enjoyed with this learning style and it would be possible to analyze and synthesize newer hypotheses and there would be no learning instruction that might disrupt the learning style (Kannan et al., 2021).

 In terms of the type of attender according to Dolnicar (2004) "6-types of attenders", the preferred group is the 4th group can be labelled as the "fundamental-oriented students" and it is preferred because it can be helpful to understand and learn the fundamental principles of every particular topic that might enthusiast to attend lectures.

Conclusion

Since the theorist as learning style has been preferred to Honey and Mumford's learning style, two major weaknesses can be identified, such as being reluctant in all terms of trying new approaches and failing in using teachers and friends as resources. In order to improve the first weakness it would be important to listen to constructive dissent and concern with important factors. Managing motivation factors needs to be improved to improve the first weakness. Moreover, in order to improve the second weakness, it would be important to interact with teachers and friends related to lectures and other assignments that might help to use them as resources.
